Blood quantum, sales tax and veterans home in local news

Good Afternoon!

In local news today, the Red Lake Nation passed a resolution Tuesday that, according to their release, is the first step towards abolishing blood quantum standards, which Secretary Sam Strong described as “mathematical genocide.”

All Red Lake members enrolled in 1958 are now considered full blood, or 4/4 quantum, which means the Red Lake Nation will include more members. Red Lake Tribal members need to have at least one quarter Red Lake ancestry to enroll.

In other news, the Bemidji City Council will consider a request for an additional sales tax this upcoming legislative session, and the Bemidji Veterans Home is on track, with groundbreaking expected as early as next year!
